“ I came to realize that, taken out of context, what teens appear to do and say on social media seems peculiar if not outright problematics” (Page 30)
“In speaking to an unknown or invisible audience, it is impossible and unproductive to accounts for the full range of plausible interpretations” (Page 32)
“Some expect their friends and family to understand and respect different social contexts and to know when something is not meant for them” (Page 34)
“While teens move between different social contexts… they manage social dynamics differently”( Page 39)
“They are grappling with battles that adults face, but they are doing so while under constant surveillance and without firm grasp of who they are” (Page 53)
The points that I brought up in the summary, to me, all were extremely interesting to read. I know that social media is causing problems in society, but I never really thought in depth of what and how the issues actually were affecting people. I felt that the concept of how teens use these platforms to branch out for different reasons including interests, and even sexuality. They sometimes don’t have people to reach out to, so by using these platforms, they can get advice and actually talk to people who share the same interests and feelings. It acts almost as a life line that these teens can use if they don’t feel comfortable going to somebody they know personally. I agree with most of her arguments, but the one I think that I vary a little different belief with is when she says that people change some of their information online to look better. I feel as though, yes that is true, but also some people don’t tell the truth to create fake profiles. I do wish that she made more of a point about how people use fake profiles for bullying and to talk to certain people without them knowing who it actually is. This is an issue in todays society to the point they even have show on television called, “Catfish”. Overall, I enjoyed reading this chapter because it really got me thinking. Ever since I finished reading it, I have been trying to be more conscious of how I use my platforms. I watch what I post, who I follow, who I allow to follow me, and what I like or share to my ‘friends’ online. I do see in myself some of the claims she brought to us as readers’ attention.
