Reflection on Peer Review Skills

In English 110, the first assignment that we had to critique was our classmate’s Higher Learning Essays. As I look back and see what I commented on that essay, I can see a drastic improvement. In the Higher Learning Essay I mostly just commented on local and surface level errors: punctuation, spelling, rewording sentences. As I look back to the more recent essays that I commented on, I notice how much more in depth they are. I now comment on the writers claims and give advice where they could add or take out specific ideas. I will still comment on punctuation if it does not make sense but they are not the main focus of all o f my comments. After we were provided with guidelines I feel that I improved almost right away. When I was told to comment on the Higher Learning Essays I wasn’t sure on what I was supposed to be looking for. As class kept progressing, I started learning new terms and developed deeper understandings on how I can drastically change my ways to help the writer improve their essays. Not only did commenting on my peers essays help them to  improve their papers, it also helped me improve mine. It allowed me to read someone’s paper, see what they have to say, comment and expand on my own ideas, come back to my own and look for it all in my personal paper. By commenting on specific things I was able to go back to my paper and look through to find them and if I couldn’t, make sure to add them in. I truly do feel as though I improved significantly when peer editing essays for classmates. I definitely will keep working at it to keep improving and eventually master the concepts and help my peers with their papers while also helping myself have a more developed, backed up,  understandable, enjoyable essay.
